Why did I create this blog? I’ve been curious about the concept of divination for as long as I can remember.

The witches and mystics of my favorite childhood stories were forever scrying into crystal balls, unraveling the future for the hapless hero of the story–for good and ill. What must it be like to live in the liminal space of possibility?

From a practical standpoint, knowing the future would empower one to game the odds of life. Tragedy could be avoided or exploited for personal gain, which is incredibly tempting.

But it would also flatten the experience of living, stealing away the beauty of mystery. Who wants a life without surprise, without challenge, without the raw, pure potency of the unknown?

And yet, there’s something that draws civilizations around the world, throughout the ages, to augury. For me, that something was connection.

At first, it was a connection to an empowering identity. I wanted to be like those soothsayers, revered and respected (maybe even a little feared) for my sharp insight and cunning.

But as I grew older, it shifted to a connection with myself…that deeper intuition, the wiser parts of me that are all-too-easily silenced in the face of excitement or pragmatism. It became a way to reach back to the sages of my own timeline, and before. A way to reframe experiences that might otherwise be overwhelming.

And something truly magical started happening: I started to pay attention.

Reading the tarot every day brought me to mindfulness, the way meditation, slow eating, forest bathing, and every other new-age trick never had.

So I decided to start this blog to track my journey deeper into the history and modern breadth of tarot and other forms of divination. And, yes, crystals, because I’ve always loved colorful rocks, but I’ve never understood “vibrations.”
